[ichild] Re: intro
Shelley, I adopted my third son through a disruption. Alex was 6,almost 7, at the time and is 19 now. He has cerebral palsy, and hisneeds and limitations turned out to be more than what the firstadoptive mom had expected. He was with that family for 13 monthsbefore I got him. I actually went to the west coast and stayed withhis first family for a week, then brought him home with me. I thinkthe way we handled the transition really helped smooth his adjustment. Also he may have been somewhat shielded from the trauma of the move byhis mild/moderate degree of mental retardation, but I'm not totallysure about that. At any rate, I always respected the first mom'sability to recognize her family's limitations and her courage to admitthat hers was not the right place for this child. So it all worked outfor the best. My two older boys are grown and out of the house, andeven though I've been doing the full-time parenting thing (as asingle) for almost 27 years, I can not begin to imagine what I wouldbe doing with my life at this point without Alex---well, taking a fewmore naps, maybe.....or staying late at work every day. What fun wouldthat be???Where in PA are you? I'm outside of Philadelphia, in western DelawareCounty.Carole To send your message to the ICHILD mailing list, your email goes to: ichild@yahoogroups.comYour ICHILD founder/administrator: Beth PKichild-owner@yahoogroups.com Yahoo!
